False Solutions to Climate Change
Geoengineering, carbon capture and sequestration, and carbon offsets are being used as a way to avoid addressing the root of the issue and transitioning off coal, oil, and natural gas and cutting back on consumption and resource extraction in order to respect planetary boundaries.
Geoengineering may be necessary to reduce immediate warming, but comes with unknown health risks, and it’s unclear what larger effect it will have on planetary systems. It’s a quick-fix that helps humanity avoid transitioning away from excess energy use and resource extraction for longer.
Carbon capture draws carbon out of the atmosphere, which many fear will ultimately enable us to continue burning fossil fuels and slow down the transition to renewable forms of energy. Similarly, carbon offsets are less effective than previously thought and may also slow progress on reducing emissions.
