Taking a break from activism
I’ve been a climate activist for about 7 years and am taking a long break. I’ve been so focused on climate change that I’ve neglected my own life and wellbeing.
Not to sound pessimistic, but unfortunately, we still aren’t heading in the right direction. We are shockingly high-risk when it comes to climate and other things like AI. It seems like our trajectory may not shift until there’s enough loss to force action.
In spite of rolling out renewables, our energy use continues to rise, we consume in a way that overshoots planetary boundaries, growing wealth inequity is putting earth at increased danger, and Trump is rolling back hard-won environmental protections. Meanwhile, global heating is accelerating, and we are on track to hit 3 degrees of warming by 2050.
I encourage anyone who reads this to become a climate activist in whatever capacity you can, and if you’re already an activist, remember to practice self-care and take breaks whenever you need to.
